PROGRAMME
2001
APPLEBY JAZZ FESTIVAL 2001
JULY 27 - 30
APPLEBY, CUMBRIA
PROGRAMME for the MARQUEE
FRIDAY 27 JULY 12.30 - 6.0pm
CLARK TRACEY QUINTET
Clark has always had the ability to form bands with the best young
players around, notably his quintet with Guy Barker and Steve Melling,
then his quartet with Gerard Presencer, this new band is in the same
mould with a group of outstanding young musicians featuring pianist
Zoe Rahman,
trumpeter Mark Armstrong, alto saxophonist Simon Allan and bassist
Ollie Hayhurst all of whom we are likely to hear much more of in the
future
.
MARTIN SPEAKE, DHARAMBIR SINGH &
SARVAR SABRI
An adherence to a particular form within which to improvise is something
that links modern jazz to the Indian classical music and most jazz
musicians I know have a great love and respect for Indian Music. Martin
has put together a trio with two of the best exponents of Indian classical
music in the country, sitar player Dharambir Singh and tabla player
Sarva Sabri.
ART THEMEN and THE BRYAN SPRING TRIO
"Don't fix it if it works" is the maxim I use when wondering
in what form to employ the brilliant tenor saxophonist Art Themen
in the festival. It works spectacularly with the Bryan Spring Trio
so here they are again.
FRIDAY 27 JULY 7.0pm - 12.00pm
DON WELLER QUARTET
The most uplifting quartet I know, whatever state
of tiredness or depression you might sink into, a few bars of this
quartet and you're cured. Living proof that music is the greatest
tonic ever. It's the usual quartet with Dave Newton on piano, Dave
Barry on drums, Arnie Somogyi on Bass and of course Don Weller playing
the tenor sax with great authority and a boundless supply of feeling
and energy.
BRYAN SPRING AND GORDON BECK.
I feel honoured that these two giants of british jazz feel comfortable
enough at Appleby to use the festival as a platform to put their considerable
talents together for the first time. Piano and drum duos are rare
in jazz, but this isn't just a pianist and a drummer coming together,
it's the joining of
two outstanding musicians each with extreme capability to create music
in any situation. Don't miss it.
PETER KING QUINTET
Britains leading alto saxophonists returns with his regular quintet
featuring Gerard Presencer on trumpet, Steve Melling on piano, Stephen
Keogh on drums and Jeremy Brown on bass.
SATURDAY 28 JULY 11.00am - 5.30pm
MICK HUTTON'S WORLD WAR 4
Its not widely enough appreciated that bassist Mick Hutton is a composer
and band leader in his own right. There is a powerfully melodic and
original slant to everything he does and this new quartet featuring
Andy Panayi on saxes, Mark Edwards on Piano and Tom Skinner on drums
is guaranteed to have an identity all of its own.
STAN TRACEY QRT & QNT
This impeccable quartet with Bobby Wellins on tenor sax, Clark Tracey
on drums and Andrew Cleyndert on bass has a feeling of total rightness,
every note, phrase and rhythm seems to be so much part of some preordained
structure that it becomes hard to realise that they are actually improvising
and the next time you hear them it will all be different. The second
set will include tenor saxophonist Don Weller who will add his own
unique personality to the equation while maintaining the overall rightness
of the total sound.
STEVE WATERMAN QRT
Many times at Appleby as a major contributor to the Don Weller Big
Band, Steve's modest and unpushy personality means his talents as
a bandleader and trumpeter of great quality often get overlooked in
the programming proccess. This year we are putting that right with
a set by his own quartet featuring Nick Weldon on piano, Jeff Clyne
on bass and Richard Newby on drums.
ALAN BARNES & DAVE NEWTON DUO.
If you have any interest in jazz in this country at all, then these
two need absolutely no introduction if you have little interest in
jazz but are thinking of trying it then don't miss this..
SATURDAY 28 JULY 6.30pm - 12.0pm
GORDON BECK'S JAZZ TRACKS
Two years ago Gordon performed a composition he had specially written
for the Appleby Festival inspired by his love of train journeys and
the famous Settle Carlisle Railway line
which runs through Appleby. With a commission from Jazzeast he has
expanded the idea into a whole suite based on other great train journeys.
As then the music is for acoustic piano played against pre - recorded
music on digital tape written and put together by Gordon himself.
STAN TRACEY'S TRIBUTE TO MONK.
Stan's love of the music of Thelonius Monk has always been obvious
and he celebrates it here by inviting guests such as Peter King, Art
Themen, Mark Nightingale, Don Weller, Gerard Presencer, Andy Pananyi
and Alan Barnes to take the stand and play their favourite monk tune
with him and his trio.
THE APPLEBY FESTIVAL BIG BAND.
A project that I have had in my mind for some years now has become
possible thanks to help from
the Friends Of Appleby, especially Jim Greig. The band contains the
regular top British musicians
who frequent the Appleby Festival and is put together to play a selection
of music by 6 of those
musicians. Namely Peter King, Clark Tracey, Mark Nightingale, Alan
Barnes Steve Waterman and
Andy Panayi. Also in the band to help bring all this new music to
life are Art Themen, Iain Dixon,
(saxes) - Adrian Hallowell, Andy Wood (trombones) - Henry Lowther,
Dick Pearce and Mark
Armstrong (trumpets) all backed up by the wonderful trio of Clark
Tracey on Drums, Steve
Melling on Piano and Mick Hutton on Bass.
SUNDAY 29 JULY 11.00am - 4.30.pm
SEXTANT
A trimmed down version of Pianist John Donaldson's Septpiece which
gave a tremendous performance at Appleby 3 years ago. There is a new
line up to with Chris Biscoe on saxes, BenDavis cello, Dylan Bates
violin, Andrew Cleyndert bass and Sebastian Rocheford on drums playingcompositions
and arrangements by John.
BRYAN SPRING TRIO This
the eleventh time I have had to write a programme entry for this trio.
The fact that they have been booked 11 years in a row says it all.
Drummer Bryan Spring's mixture of unsurpassable technique and committed
creativity continues to spark remarkable performances from pianist
Mark Edwards and bassist Andy Cleyndert.
ANDRA SPARKS QUINTET
The first time I have booked a vocalist for Appleby on the basis of
a CD recording alone. Andra is a fascinating example of a classical
singer who, after many years singing 20th century classical song,
has turned to Jazz. But, unlike many who have tried this before, she
really does have a great
feel for the music. Accompanied by a top flight band featuring Nick
Weldon on piano and the wonderful Iain Dixon on sax. Jeff Clyne on
bass and Trevor Tomkins on drums.
DAVID NEWTON TRIO
His trio CD Halfway To Dawn released last year is an absolute must
for anybodies collection. He was greatly missed at last years festival
but he returns this year with his regular trio of Steve Brown on drums
and Matt Miles on bass.
SUNDAY 29 JULY 5.00pm - 9.30pm
DICK PEARCE QUARTET
When asked to identify the trumpet player on a recording, if its not
Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis or Dick Pearce I rarely get it right.
His haunting and reflective tone is unmistakeable and I am looking
forward to hearing with pianist John Donaldson, Bassist Arnie Somogyi
and drummer Bryan Spring.
STAN TRACEY & GERARD PRESENCER DUO
Anyone who heard them play "Some Other Blues"on their debut
performance in the QEH in 1994 will understand why I could't miss
the opportunity to put them together again.
PETER KING AND GORDON BECK DUO
Peter and Gordon's musical collaboration goes back to the Tubby Hayes
era of British Jazz, bothhave since carved out great reputations on
the international scene and their mutual respect for eachothers music
will ensure their enjoyment at this opportunity to perform a duo set.
ALAN BARNES & ART THEMEN GO LATIN.
To send everyone home in high spirits this band should create a festive
finale with a whole set of
latin based jazz music. Also joining in the festivities will be pianist
John Donaldson, drummer Dave
Barry, bassist Arnie Somogyi and percussionist Simon Morton.
