APPLEBY JAZZ FESTIVAL 1999
JUNE 25 - 27
APPLEBY, CUMBRIA
FRIDAY 25 JUNE
1.00pm - 6.00pm
PARTISANS
The Festival starts off in top gear with this exciting band made up
of Julian Siegal on saxes, Phil Robson on electric guitar, Gene Calderazzo
on drums and Thad Kelly on Bass. The music is a very successful blend
of many influences, played with verve by a very together band.
PETE JACOBSEN & MARK EDWARDS DUO
Saxophonists continually have the opportunity to work together using
each other as springboards for improvisatory ideas, but pianists rarely
do. So this year we are supplying two pianos on stage and running
a series of piano duets. Both these pianists have appeared regularly
at Appleby but this is their first chance to stretch out and show
their considerable pianistic talents together.
CLARK TRACEY’S TRIBUTE TO ART
BLAKEY
This band is filling venues up and down the country. The mixture of
Art Blakey classics arranged by Clark Tracey - whose passion for the
music is obvious - played by this top line-up is proving to be a winner.
An unforgettable combination of Clark Tracey on drums, and Dave Green
on Bass.
7.00 - 12.00pm
STAN TRACEY QRT.
Stan has played three sets at the festival every year since the beginning
but this year due to a Canadian tour his visit has had to be shortened.
Mornington Lockett has appeared many times at the festival but always
alongside other horn players. Here he gets to form a quartet with
easily the best trio in the country.
MARILYN CRISPELL SOLO
Already a major name on the American and International free-improvisation
circuits, and a regular member of the Evan Parker Quartet, Marilyn
will be making a rare solo appearance in this country.
ALAN BARNES NONET
(The Florence Farsky memorial concert)
This is a special concert in memory of Florence Farsky - an Appleby
Jazz Festival devotee since the beginning - who sadly died in 1998.
Florence was a great lover of Alan Barnes’ music, so what better
way to celebrate her life than a performance of Alan’s brilliant
arrangements of classic tunes played by Andy Panayi (sax & flute),
Iain Dixon (tenor), Dick Pearce (trumpet) Mark Nightingale (trombone),
David Newton (piano), Anthony Kerr (vibes), Dave Green (bass) and
Steve Brown (drums).
SATURDAY 26 JUNE
11.00am - 6pm
TIM WHITEHEAD QNT.
A welcome return to Appleby for Tim’s quartet, featuring pianist
Pete Jacobsen, bassist Arnie Somogyi and drummer Dave Barry. This
time they are accompanied by cellist Philip Shepherd to give performance
of "Sound Tracks" - a piece commissioned from Tim by Joan
Morrell of Eastern Arts and recently broadcast on Radio 3.
GORDON BECK & DAVID NEWTON
Continuing the two pianos feature, it is hard to imagine what sort
of music is going to emerge from this pairing of uniquely individual
players, but you know that whatever happens it will be electrifying.
ART THEMEN & THE BRYAN SPRING TRIO
Art’s more abstract approach to playing works perfectly with
this trio forming a musical quartet with lightning responses and equal
input giving the music an air of vibrant tension .
STAN TRACEY & STEVE MELLING
This final pairing in the piano duet slot brings together two pianists
who always give one hundred percent of themselves every time they
touch the keyboard. A guaranteed hour of tense excitement.
EVAN PARKER, BARRY GUY, PAUL LYTTON
& MARILYN CRISPELL
Four superstars on the international scene unfortunately much less
acclaimed in the UK. This is free improvisation at its absolute best.
The one common thing about music from any culture or time is that
it is all sound, whatever harmonic or rhythmic patterns may be formed.
Approached from this perspective there is no other group of musicians
that have as much experience of manipulating sound together in a live
situation as these four. And it shows.
7.15pm - 12.00pm
GARY HUSBAND TRIO
Gary Husband has an impressive pedigree both as a drummer and a pianist.
He worked for many years as a drummer in the jazz /rock field with
Alan Holdsworth, Jack Bruce, Level 42, Andy Summers and, more recently,
as a pianist with Billy Cobham and Randy Brecker. His sound musical
instincts are also apparent in his choice of Mick Hutton (bass) and
Gene Calderazzo (drums) for his latest trio project which has already
recorded a CD called " From The Heart" - which says it all
for this band.
GORDON BECK SOLO
Gordon Beck’s solo performance last year was the major highlight
for me and I was left wondering how 9 festival years could have elapsed
without him being on the programme. From now on I hope he will be
a permanent fixture at the Festival.
THE DON WELLER BIG BAND
"The greatest live experience we have ever attended - it was
fantastic" wrote a reader in a letter to Jazz UK. It is the combination
of Don’s completely unique and joyful music played by Messrs.,
King, Themen, Barnes, Speake, Lockett, Newton, Nightingale, Pearce,
Lowther, and Griffiths etc that makes every performance of this band
unforgettable.
SUNDAY 27 JUNE
11.00 am - 4.00
ORQUESTRA MAHATMA & THE SOLID STRINGS
Percussionist Paul Clarvis’s trio with Stuart Hall on violin
and Thad Kelly on Bass are joined by a string quartet made up of Sonia
Stany, Jaqueline Norris, Sophie Renshaw, and Nick Cooper. They play
an off-the-wall set of mixed material including eastern European and
Yiddish tunes alongside Ellington and Bernstein. Many will remember
Stuart Hall’s inventive and exuberant playing last year when
he featured in Septet - this set promises to be every bit as different
and exciting.
BRYAN SPRING, MICK HUTTON & MARK
EDWARDS
An Appleby festival without this trio is unthinkable; the empathy
and creative bond between them is without comparison. When it comes
to improvising before an audience these musicians really go for it
- there are never any half measures.
LEE GIBSON
What I particularly like about Lee, as well as her incredible musicality
and drive, is her ability to respond to and work with the musicians
around her making the whole performance integrated. This is Lee’s
second appearance at Appleby and this time she is on stage with pianist
David Newton, bassist Dave green and drummer Steve Brown, with Alan
Barnes
guesting on saxes. 4.30pm - 9.30pm
GILAD ATZMON
I first heard Gilad in a pub in Cambridge a few years ago, and wondered
where this remarkable talent had suddenly sprung from. Since then
he has been making a name for himself on the British scene and comes
to Appleby with an exceptionally good trio featuring Val Mannix on
bass and Sam Brown on drums.
PETER KING QRT.
One of the greatest alto players alive today, his ability to deliver
at speed phrases where every note feels considered and part of a structured
line is unchallenged. Peter creates stunning solos which continue
to reveal something new every time you listen to them. Always at his
best with his regular quartet featuring Steve Melling on piano, Stephen
Keogh on drums and Jeremy Brown on bass.
THE DON WELLER QUARTET
We always aim to send people home from the festival feeling uplifted
and with smiles on their faces. Don’s quartet is absolutely
guaranteed to achieve that result. Don has just won the BT Jazz Award
for best Tenor Saxophone for the third time and as with Peter King
he is at his best playing with his regular quartet of David Newton
on piano, Dave Barry on drums and Arnie Somogyi on bass.
TIM WHITEHEAD is giving a saxophone master class at Bongate Mill at
3.0pm on Saturday 26 June. £10 for a 2 hour session. For more
