PROGRAMME
1998
APPLEBY JAZZ FESTIVAL 1998
JULY 24 - 26
APPLEBY, CUMBRIA
FRIDAY 24th July 12.00 - 6.0pm
HYDRA
A seven piece band that contains the cream of young players based
in the Leeds - Manchester area. Including last years "Young Jazz
Musician of the year" Alistair White on
trombone, Mike Hope (runner up in the 1996 awards) on Tenor, Dave
Edge on alto and Chris Coull (whose compositions and arrangements
the band play) on trumpet and flugel horn. The
rhythm section is Richard Wetheral (piano) John Thorn (bass) and Milo
Fell (drums). An exciting band which will set a high standard for
the start the festival. [Band feature]
GORDON BECK TRIO
This unique and strongly individual talent is too rarely heard in
this country and probably the only great British pianist who hasn't
yet played at Appleby. Gordon toured last autumn with
the Peter King Quartet and appears for this set with the same rhythm
section - Stephen Keogh (drums) and Jeremy Brown (bass).
THEMEN, WELLER & BARNES
It has become impossible to put these three great reed players on
the programme and not put them together in the compulsive company
of David Newton (piano), Arnie Somogyi (bass)
and Dave Barry (drums); ensuring two hours of festive fun and high
quality music.
FRIDAY 24th July 7.0pm - 12.0pm
BOBBY WELLINS & STAN TRACEY
These two veteran musicians at the height of their powers were so
obviously meant to play together that we have brought them back to
Appleby again this year. Stan Tracey's trio with Clark Tracey on drums
and Andrew Cleyndert on Bass is superbly tuned to Bobby Wellins's
unique tone and that deceptively simple style which belies a lifetime's
experience of subtly
sculpted sound.
GORDON BECK
A rare chance to here one of Britain's piano greats play solo.
PETER KING QUARTET
This famous quartet featuring Stephen Keogh, Jeremy Brown and Steve
Melling is on terrific form at the moment. Peter is at his awesome
best and it would be difficult to name a player
on either side of the Atlantic in the same league.
SATURDAY 25th July 11.0am - 6.0pm
DICK PEARCE QUARTET
Dick Pearce, hidden away for years in the ranks of the Ronnie Scott
Sextet, is a player who has never had the acclaim he deserves. Thankfully
he now heads a quartet where the true stature of his playing can be
fully appreciated. In this band are John Donaldson (piano), Dave Barry
(drums) and Chris Dodd (Bass).
GERARD PRESENCER'S PLATYPUS
In addition to being star trumpeter in everybody else's
band Gerard has formed his own `Platypus', which consists of John
Paricelli (guitar), Jim Watson (Piano), Jeremy Stacey (drums) and
Andrew Cleyndert (bass). The band ventures away from bebop towards
the area of funk, but whatever area of music Gerard strays into his
ability to create great music is assured.
ALAN BARNES QUARTET
Now a permanent fixture at Appleby, the versatile Alan Barnes has
appeared in all formats from duo to octet playing a multitude of instruments.
This year he brings a quartet specially put together to feature his
powerful and highly impressive Baritone playing. Alongside him will
be Matt Miles on bass, Steve Brown on drums and David Newton on piano
who will also be featured in a duet with Alan.
MARTIN TAYLOR SOLO
We are delighted to be able to feature this great British guitarist
solo at Appleby.
SATURDAY 25th July 7.30 - 12.00pm
THE BRYAN SPRING TRIO
This trio, with Mark Edwards and Mick Hutton, needs no introduction
to the regular audience, and for many it will be the highlight of
the festival. An absolute must for first timers at Appleby.
THE STAN TRACEY OCTET
This band has everything, great writing, a sound as large as a full
big band, powerful ensemble playing and fantastic soloists all driven
by what must be one of the best trios in the world. This is the original
octet featuring messrs Weller, King, Themen, Presencer and Griffiths
plus Stan's trio with Clark Tracey and Andrew Cleyndert.
SUNDAY 26th July 11.0 - 4.00pm
SEPTPIECE
SeptPiece is a new group featuring seven musicians drawn from a wide
spectrum in the world of music. The group is based around the superlative
trio of John Donaldson, Andrew
Cleyndert and Dave Mattacks with Jote Osahn (violin) and Laura Fairhurst
(cello). The two soloists Mark Lockhart (tenor and flute) and Stuart
Hall (violin) use the colours that the
group affords to give a wide and interesting repertoire, drawing not
only from original compositions and more standard themes but also
from the compositions of Frank Zappa to
Astor Piazzolla.
TIM GARLAND QUINTET
Tim provided the festival with such an electric performance last year
that we have brought him back this year with a completely different
band. Featuring Gerard Presencer on trumpet,
Jim Watson on piano, Mick Hutton on bass and Dave Barry on drums.
STACEY KENT QUINTET
Since first appearing in Appleby in 1994 Stacey's reputation as one
of the country's leading jazz vocalists has grown steadily and her
recent CD has won great acclaim everywhere. She is accompanied by
the wonderful David Newton, who needs no introduction to Appleby.
SUNDAY 26th July 4.30pm - 9.0pm
ART THEMEN, BRYAN SPRING & MICK
HUTTON
Abstractly shaped saxophone playing, intensely committed drumming
and strong, powerfully melodic bass lines are welded together to give
this trio a completely unique sound.
DON WELLER QUARTET
Don's playing goes from strength to strength. A critic reviewing his
playing at the 100 club this you honestly wonder - is there actually
anyone better than him? And we're talking latterday Rollins, Lovano,
Murray here - not just the native competition." And you won't
hear him in better company than with the members of his regular quartet
David Newton, Dave Barry and Arnie Somogyi.
PETER KING/ALAN BARNES & THE STAN
TRACEY TRIO
The festival organiser's indulgence and curiosity has put this final
musical combination together. Though they've played together in various
big band settings these two saxophonists have never played together
before. What better trio is there than Stan's, to act as the catalyst?
EVAN PARKER'S FREEZONE
THE REDUNDANT ST MICHAEL'S CHURCH (Next to the Main Venue)
Sat. 25th July 4.0 - 6.0pm Sun. 26th. 2.30 - 4.30pm
The great British free improviser Evan Parker will be joined for these
two concerts by violinist Phil Wachsman and the trio featured on his
latest CD recording "London Airlift":
Mark Sanders(drums) John Russell(guitar), John Edwards(Bass). St Michael's
Church, on the site of an ancient Viking Church, provides superb acoustics
for this type of music and is owned by painter Phil Morsman, whose
painting appears on the CD cover. Also joining Evan in this acoustic
venue will be Peter King and Gerard Presencer
