APPLEBY JAZZ FESTIVAL 1997

APPLEBY, CUMBRIA

 

DAVID NEWTON QUARTET.
Featuring the excellent tenor playing of Iain Dixon with Steve
Brown on drums and Matt Miles bass.

DAVE O'HIGGINS QRT.
A regular favourite at the festival is appearing at last with
his own quartet which has been filling venues up and down the
country this last year. The line up will be Gene Caldorazzo
(drums), Robin Aspland(Piano) and Alec Dankworth(Bass).

PAUL DUNMALL OCTET
This mixture of some of the country's best free improvisers and
ensemble players has been put together to tour performances of
two compostions of Tenor Saxophonist Paul Dunmall. In the band
are Keith Tippet, Simon Picard, Annie Whitehead, Paul Rogers,
Tony Levin.

THE STAN TRACEY TRIO
Stan is always at Appleby because, he is always creative, always
swings and always gives everything to the music. With Clark
Tracey on drums and Andrew Cleyndert on bass this is the ultimate
in piano trios.

DON WELLER/ ALAN BARNES QNT.
This is an amalgamation of Don Wellers's quartet featuring David
Newton and Alan Barnes's current trio consisting of Mick Hutton
and Bryan Spring who co-led the famous Weller/Spring Quartet for
many years. This band promises a great climax for the first of
the festival.


TIM GARLAND QUARTET
They provided such a great evening of music at the Appleby Jazz
Cafe last September that we couldn't resist having them back.
Tims lyrical sax playing stemming from a wide range of influences
is backed Tim Robsons Guitar, Alec Dankworths bass and too little
heard drumming of Winston Clifford.

ART THEMEN/ JOHN CRITCHINSON QRT

EVAN PARKER, PAUL ROGERS & TONY LEVIN
This technically brilliant and brilliantly creative saxophonist
is a regular at Appleby and is joined this year by Paul Rogers
on bass and Tony Levin on drums.

KEITH TIPPET SOLO
A long overdue visit to the festival by britains leading free
improvising pianist .

MUJICIAN & EVAN PARKER
This well established improvising group made up of Paul Dunmall,
Keith Tippet, Paul Rogers and Tony Levin are joined for the last
hour of the afternoon By Evan Parker.


BRYAN SPRING TRIO
Three brilliant virtuoso's Bryan Spring(drums), Mark Edwards
(piano) and Mick Hutton make music together that never fails to
hold the Appleby audiences attention in a vice like grip which
when released leaves them knowing that something extra ordinary
has just happened to them.
