year playing Gerry Mulligan, Bob Brookmeyer material with freshness
and enthusiasm. Alongside Andy on tenor and baritone saxes are Mark

EVAN PARKER SOLO.
Evan uses the limitations of a single reed to produce several separate
lines of music that weave together to form patterns that are always
delighting and surprising the ear. Although
often labelled a "Free Musician" his music has both structure
and intensity, and uses a technique which demands extreme concentration.
JIM MULLEN QUARTET.
The first appearance at Appleby of this great british guitarist and
his quartet featuring Dave O'Higgins on Tenor Sax, Lawrence Cottle
on bass and Ian Thomas on drums.
SUNDAY EVENING
BRYAN SPRING TRIO
For many people last year this trio provided the emotional highspot
of the weekend. The great empathy between Bryan Spring's drumming,
the piano playing of Steve Melling and Andy
Cleyndert's bass produces a music that is unpredictable, exciting
and extremely sensitive to the nuances of the musical language.
THE STAN TRACEY OCTET
This year they create the finale to the festival and will ensure that
everyone goes home in good spirits. Don Weller, Art Themen and Peter
King are the saxes, Malcolm Griffiths supplies the wonderfully exuberant
trombone playing and Guy Barker the blistering trumpet. The rhythm
section is Malcolm Crease (bass), Clark Tracey (drums) and, of course,
the great Stan Tracey on the piano.
